Configs to buy / avoid: A laptop of this size is only really worth it with the RTX 5080 or 5090 GPUs, as the extra space let's you get the most out of the powerful hardware. We recommend avoiding lower specced RTX 5060 or 5070 GPUs in this massive chassis unless they're heavily discounted or you really want the 18" Alienware for other reasons. The optional mechanical keyboard is personal preference, it feels nice to use, but the loud noise won't be nice for others if you take it to school or the office. Testing notes: The Area-51 delivered full-powered RTX 5090 performance, up to 175W GPU power with 105W CPU power under combined load, one of the best CPU scores we have recorded, cool keyboard temps, strong 4K gaming with DLSS, a bright 500 nit IPS screen, fast 300Hz response times, Advanced Optimus, G-Sync, 5Gb ethernet, XMP memory support, and three M.2 SSD slots. Trade-offs: The main compromises were its extreme weight, weak battery life, no Mini-LED screen option, loud fans in higher modes, slow Alienware Command Center software load times, soldered Wi-Fi despite there clearly being room for a removable Wi-Fi card, no real Type-C gaming, and a slippery glass bottom that makes lap use bad. Alternatives: If you want a better overall 18 inch gaming laptop experience, consider the Lenovo Legion 9i because it offers a more compelling high-end package with more features. If you do not need an 18 inch desktop replacement, a high-end 16 inch laptop will offer most of the performance, but will be much easier to travel with, such as the ASUS Scar 16, or Lenovo Legion Pro 7i.
