Configs to buy / avoid: Consider buying the Intel Panther Lake processor versions (356H/386H) for best battery life, but avoid the AMD HX processors (8745HX/8940HX) unless you've got the charger available. The AMD HX and Intel HX processors will offer better CPU performance due to having more cores and threads. Based on our testing, the RTX 5070 GPU does not seem worth paying more for compared to the lower tier 5060, as the 5070 performed like a 5060 already due to GPU power limits. The OLED screen option is nice, but the middle ground 2560x1600 screen is still great and a fair bit cheaper. Testing notes: The RTX 5070 model we reviewed ran at just 67W and was often beaten by other cheaper 5060 laptops in games. The optional OLED screen in our model looked great, and thermal testing was extremely impressive, however the lower temperatures and lower fan noise are a clear result of the lower power limits and performance compromises. Trade-offs: The main compromises are weak GPU performance, resulting in less FPS in games compared to most alternative options for the same, if not less money. The lack of premium gaming features like MUX switch, Advanced Optimus, and G-Sync hold it back compared to other budget friendly laptops that still manage to include these features, such as Lenovo's LOQ. Upgrades are limited, as both M.2 storage slots cannot fit higher capacity SSDs that have chips on both sides. Alternatives: We recommend Lenovo's Legion 5 as a better performing option for the money at a very similar 15" size. If a slightly bigger laptop is acceptable, the ASUS TUF F16 is also worth considering.
